Some Like It Hot/Hellcats (2008) (Korean)

Korean movie focusing mainly on comedy, coming of age, and drama.

Due to the severe lack of new Shoujo-ai/Yuri Anime’s, we won’t be seeing an Anime review (*sigh*…at least a recent one…) for quite some time. I hate dry spells…

This movie centers around a family of three. One mother, her daughter, and her sister, all going through a romantic crisis. The single mother Kim Young Mi (Lee MiSook), is going through a mid-life crisis where she worries she’s too old to attract men anymore. Until she meets Kyoung-soo, who is an aspiring actor in the same theater who find her 40-some self sexy. Her Sister, 27 year old screenplay writer, Kim Ah-mi (Kim MinHee), also going through a crisis of love. Having just broken up with her deadbeat boyfriend, meets a man she typically would not date. The daughter of Young Mi, Kim Kang-ae (Ahn SoHee from the Wonder Girls), finds herself in her own teenage crisis of being in love with her best friend and dealing with her sexuality and that she just might be a lesbian. Together, all 3 work through their struggles and come to terms with their selves.

I like this movie A LOT. Despite that 2/3 couple story lines are straight, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as well as the lesbian pairing. Granted, it is a KOREAN movie so understandably they can’t take it too far, but still very well enjoyed. I would say its more drama/coming to terms with yourself kind of movie rather than a comedy, but I still enjoyed it non the less.

Twin Cake (2012 – 2013)

Written and Drawn by Aoi Hana

Yes, I know I’ve been doing A LOT of manga reviews lately

http://yurination.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/twin-cake-cover.png

Twin cake is about a girl named Kaede (shorter haired one) who idolizes a famous model, Susuran so much that she decided to pursue modelling herself. She even joins Susuran’s modelling agency in order to get closer to her, but has never actually met Susuran despite this. However, she has failed to become popular and instead works much more like an assistant and secretary for her agency. After Susuran fires ANOTHER one of her managers, the agency is in a desperate need to replace them in order to look more legit. As a last minute desperation, she decides to hire Kaede as Susuran’s new manager.

Kaede is first very excited to become Susuran’s new manager. However her image of Susuran is immediate shattered upon walking in on Susuran having sex with another female model. (No spoiler, second chapter lol). Kaede, embarrassed begins to see Susuran in a different light and falls even deeper in love. Susuran however, is still in love with someone else.

This was a pretty good manga, although short (7 chapters). It IS pretty angsty (prepare yourself) but still enjoyable.

THERE IS NUDITY. It’s not a main element (so it’s not hentai) but it does exist, as well as sex.

Octave (2008 – 2011)

This is actually one of my favorite manga’s.

The story revolves around a former idol of a not-so-popular group when she was a teenager, Miyashita Yukino. Not willing to endure the bullying of high school after her failure, she decided to work in the industry as an assistant manager. Through her struggles, she meets a fairly successful song writer, Iwai Setsuko.  Seduced by Iwai’s beauty, she explores her sexuality and eventually falls in love. However she struggles with her relationship as she is not only confused by her sexuality, but has taken on the toll of being a manager and coming to terms with her past.

I really enjoyed this manga. You go through Yukino as she has to come to terms with many things in her life, with love being one of them. It’s a great coming of age story I think and perfect for our generation. The story is very deep though and very….angsty to say the least. Not VERY angsty where you want to cry, but the kind of angst where you’re kind of irritated.

I enjoyed the artwork. It’s simple yet detailed enough. I do encourage anyone to give it a shot!

Daughters of Club Bilitis (2011) (Korean)

The TV/movie special show by KBS “Daughters of Club Bilitis” that caused a ton of controversy in Korea.

Genre: Angst, Drama

Finding a download/stream link to this was harder than it should. After a lot of pain, I managed to extract one from a chinese player and uploaded it myself >=(

Here.

https://i2.wp.com/www.ucanews.com/uploads/2011/08/lesbians.jpg

The story revolves around 3 couples at 3 different stages of their lives, and the basic struggles of being gay through out the short period.

It’s a very short story (THANKS KBS) because of controversy (homosexuality is not accepted in Korea….yet). I applaud KBS for willing to take a step in this direction, but I have to take that applause back for succumbing to the pressures of the KCC.

Background to Korea’s views on homosexuality: Homosexuality does not exist to Koreans. If it is, some may consider it a disease or a mental illness. I’ve spoken with some Korean students nowadays, and things seem to be getting better. There are gay pride gatherings (if you’re brave enough), and younger generations view it more as a “why would I care? It’s their life not mine” which is good. The problem is the older generation. Right now, they’re the ones on Koreas censorship committee (they decide what is aired at what times. They have control over blocking certain websites and putting restrictions) and the ones running the government, and parents. They still hold very conservative views. These views are then passed down onto their children and hence, most people in school/society believe these views as well. Yes, you can get fired for being gay, and no there are no real laws protecting gays. But like I said, things ARE getting a bit better, but most of the time it’s a very bad place to be gay.

The first pairing are high school students, Kim Jooyeon and Yoon Yeokyung. They’re not together, but whilst Jooyeon was staring at the girl she likes does Yeokyung notice, and together they become friends, talking about their struggles in Korean society. The second are in their middle age, Kang Hana and Lee Youngeun going through the struggles of hiding their relationship from people around them. Jooyeon reaches out to Kang Hana on the internet for help struggling with her own sexuality. Hana then takes Jooyeon to the Daughters of Bilitis club, run by couple Choi Hyangja and Park Myung Hee. A club exclusively for lesbians to be themselves. Choi hyangja and Myung hee together go through the struggles of already being out.

Although short (due to controversy), I still enjoyed it. They unfortunately couldn’t push it too much such as passionate kissing or sex scenes (again, a show about lesbians was already pushing it), it was still very enjoyable. All the women are pretty nice to stare at too. I do wish they could’ve done more, even just kissing =(

Dandelion Among Lilies (2013 – 2014)

AKA “Yuri ni Tanpopo” written and drawn by Yamaguchi Serika

ynt

The story begins with Fuji Kana, a girl who had just broke up with her boyfriend. Surprisingly, she receives a call from her sister, Mizuho, asking to stay with Kana for a bit, but she brings along her special someone. That special someone turns out to be a girl! The story changes and begins to go through the challenges what Mizuho and her girlfriend have gone through when being a gay couple in Japanese society.

It’s a good story, no straight plot, and is much more on the serious side of things. It’s pretty short (only 6 chapters) so this won’t be super extensive, and there isn’t too much to judge when it comes to the ratings. I did dock a couple points on the Yuri rating because…well….with out spoiling anything, plot. It’s quite minor, but I couldn’t bring myself to give it full points.

Matsumoto Seicho Special: Yubi (2006)(Japanese)

Starring Goto Maki from Morning Musume and Mari Hoshino

Genre: Thriller, Mystery

yubi.jpg

Finding an English link to this was difficult! I’m not sure if I can find the download file for it. Link

The story takes place where Fukue Yumiko (Goto Maki), formerly a struggling performer, is now a world famous actress. However she encounters someone from her past. Suzuki Kaori (Mari Hoshino) who had showed Yumiko kindness by giving the struggling Yumiko a free bowl of Ramen. However, when approaching Yumiko again, Yumiko seems to have changed and brushed Kaori off as a forgotten memory. However, Kaori is now an investigative reporter. While on a different case, searching for a neighborhood dog killer, she accidentally catches Yumiko and points to her as being the dog killer. Thus begins digging into Yumikos past. Examining how she got to where she is now, and why she has changed so dramatically.

A lot of it is saved for the spoilers, but to be quite honest I hated the other women in this movie. The only attractive one was Yumiko and Kaori. And Kaori was straight. OK YES THAT WAS KIND OF A SPOILER. BUT THATS ONLY TO PROTECT YOU. DON’T GET YOUR HOPES UP.

There wasn’t really a lot of lesbian action itself. Like most movies, it is way more focused on the storyline. That’s great but, still the other women were….pretty ugly tbh. I’ve seen some of their pics for other movies, and they aren’t that bad. But one was either super old, or one had the weirdest haircut I’ve ever seen. And also pretty old.

Plot was OK. It’s way more about Yumiko’s character rather than plot though so. Plot didn’t really go anywhere.

Renai Idenshi XX (2009 – 2013)

AKA Love DNA XX, or Love Gene XX. Written by Eiki Eiki, and drawn by Zaou Taishi

renai

Recently completed and done fan translated, it can be found here.

The story revolves around a world where men no longer exist. They have become extinct, and now only females survive. However, the government has decided to implement an “Eden” project, where half the population is split into ADAMS (predominantly the “males” in this society) and the EVES, the females. ADAMS are supposed to take on the role that men used to, such as working and the EVES take the female role, taking care of children and such.

ADAMS are even forced to bind their chest in order to look more male. It is forbidden for EVES to be together, as is the same as ADAMS (almost similar to homosexuality).

As for the amount of lesbian content, well, the whole freakin world is female 🙂 That makes me happy. However,  despite all this, I do forget occasionally that the ADAMS are in fact female. I often get lost, due to the art style, and read it in a male voice in my head. It mind tripped me a bit the first couple of times. It was difficult to get used to. Especially since the translators decided to refer to the ADAMS as males at a certain point because the original Japanese story used the Japanese pronoun of “he”, and so they used that.

The story is incredibly straight forward. This story is more focused on the realization of a very obvious love rather than the struggles it is to be together. I’d have to say there is no actual strong plot, or some strong resistance towards them other than society. The story had so much potential, and even then….

Annnyways, I’ll save that for the spoilers section.

As for art, I thought it was quite good and pretty, even if it was this weird mesh of male-female traits and characteristics, I still thought it was quite beautiful.
